Twenty20 cricket demands that batsmen throw the bat at the ball but Michael Carberry took that to a literal level in the Big Bash League on Monday.

The former England opener was on seven in the fifth over of Perth Scorchers’ game against the Adelaide Strikers as Kane Williamson charged in to bowl. Carberry looked to hammer a length ball out of the ground, but could only connect with thin air and lost his grip on the bat, sending it cartwheeling away in the vague direction of backward square leg.

The bat dropped safe and both batsman and bowler could afford to smile about the incident. Carberry, the Hampshire batsman, went on to make 27 from 35 balls in the Strikers’ total of 146 for seven.
