Rail passengers in the west of Scotland could face several days disruption after engineering works between Glasgow and Paisley overran.

Trains between Glasgow Central and Paisley Canal and Paisley Gilmour Street have been suspended and replaced with bus services.

A First ScotRail spokesman said: "We regret and are disappointed by the overrun of these Network Rail works."

The train operator said it only found out about the overrun on Sunday.

A spokesman said: "We did not know that there was a possibility of an overrun involving the Paisley Canal line until late Sunday morning and the position with Paisley Gimour Street arose later.

"In both instances, we worked hard to ensure replacement bus services were delivered."

He added: "We apologise for the invonvenience caused by not being able to run normal services."

'Safe running'

Network Rail said there was no estimate for a normal train service to resume between Glasgow Central and Paisley Gilmour Street.

A spokesman said testing of new signalling equipment in the Shields junction area was ongoing.

He said: "Network Rail apologises for the inconvenience this delay in reopening passenger lines will cause but the proper installation and testing of signals is vital to the safe running of the railway.

"We are working to restore a full service through Shields junction to Glasgow Central as soon as possible."

Services between Glasgow Central and Paisley Canal will remain suspended throughout Monday.

A half-hour return service is running from Glasgow to Ayr.

All other Ayrshire and Inverclyde services are starting or terminating at Paisley Gilmour Street.

Delays to work on the West Coast main line caused disruption over the festive period.
