Air passengers in Northern Ireland will still only be allowed to carry one bag onboard from Monday (7 January).

Some UK airports, including Heathrow, Manchester and Glasgow, will now permit two onboard luggage pieces.

Size limits on liquids and cabin baggage will still apply and some airlines, including Easyjet, will retain the one-bag rule.

Belfast International, George Best Belfast City and Derry City airports have until May to comply.

Belfast International Airport spokeswoman Debra Matchett said: "It is a rolling programme that some airports will be able to implement fairly quickly, at others it will take time to get extra machines.

"We are currently reconfiguring our central search security area."

The government has stressed it is up to passengers to check hand-luggage policy with individual airlines.
