Sydney teen who shouted 'kill the Jews' at Jewish children sentenced to Shabbat dinner and visit to Jewish museum

Version 0 of 1. A Sydney teenager arrested for an attack on Jewish school children has been instructed to attend a Shabbat dinner and visit a Jewish Museum. The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested after he and a group of other youths boarded a bus carrying Jewish school children in Sydney and shouted "kill the Jews", "Heil Hitler", as well as making throat slitting threats, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. As part of his punishment, the boy, who is a minor, will participate in a harmony program run by the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies. It was also recommended that he attend a Shabbat dinner, visit the Sydney Jewish Museum and read books from Holocaust survivors, including Primo Levi’s If This Is A Man and Elie Wiesel’s Night. The punishment was agreed by both sides at a youth justice conference on 9 December in Sydney for the boy, which one of his victims and her family were present at. The conference is a Juvenile Justice NSW service and was attended by a police youth liaison officer, a social worker, the boy’s parents and Vic Alhadeff, chief executive of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies. Mr Alhadeff said: “The conference provided a measure of closure to the young girl who was present. "It gave her an opportunity to question the offender, to hear from him and to hear him express remorse for his actions. At the same time, he could hear directly from some of those affected as to the impact of his actions." The other youths involved were given cautions, the SMH reports. |
