The son of a London nightclub owner has appeared in court charged with his murder.

David West, 44, of Jermyn Street, Piccadilly, was at Westminster Magistrates' Court charged with killing his father, who has the same name.

The 70-year-old's body was found on Friday night. A post-mortem test gave the cause of death as a single stab wound.

Mr West owned restaurant Abracadabra and nightclub Hey Jo in Mayfair.

He started a business selling flowers and groceries from a stall in Romford market in east London before selling alcohol from a Calais warehouse called Eastenders.

In 2007 he made headlines after he hired Cherie Blair to mount a legal challenge against the smoking ban.

His son was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on Wednesday.
