A 22-year-old man was arrested late Sunday morning in connection with the shooting death of Jakell Mitchell, a freshman football player at Auburn.

Markale Deandre Hart of Camp Hill, Ala., was arrested on felony murder charges by Auburn police, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff Department and Jackson Gap Police in Dadeville, Ala., which is about 25 miles from Auburn. Auburn police chief Paul Register told reporters (via USA Today) that Hart is being held in Lee County jail, with bond set at $150,000. Mitchell, 18, was shot and killed shortly after midnight at an apartment complex near the Auburn University campus.

Mitchell, an Opelika, Ala., native who had redshirted his freshman year, was a passenger in a vehicle that police encountered when they arrived at the Tiger Lodge complex near campus. He was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at East Alabama Medical Center. Although an investigation into his death remains open, no additional arrests are expected, police said.

The shooting occurred at the same apartment complex where two former Auburn players died in a 2012 shooting. Desmonte Leonard was convicted of capital murder in the shooting deaths of former Auburn players Ed Christian and Ladarious Phillips and another man. He is awaiting sentencing next month.
