Nigeria: Bombings Kill at Least 31 Nigeria: Bombings in Jos Kill at Least 31
(about 14 hours later)
At least 31 people were killed in a double bombing in the central city of Jos on Thursday at a market near a bus station where a similar attack killed dozens of people in May. A spokesman for the state governor said that 31 bodies had been recovered but that the death toll could rise as rescue workers continued their search. The city lies in Nigeria’s “Middle Belt” where the mainly Muslim north meets the mostly Christian south. It has been the target of attacks by the extremist group Boko Haram in the past, but it is also a hotbed of ethnic and sectarian tensions that have boiled over into episodes of violence. At least 31 people were killed in a double bombing in the central city of Jos on Thursday at a market near a bus station where a similar attack killed dozens of people in May.
