A pregnant woman stuck in heavy traffic on the way to hospital gave birth in the back of a police car.

The mother-to-be and her partner attracted the attention of police officers Ian Sullivan, Holly Galvin and George Wigley after becoming caught up in traffic outside Queen’s Road car park in Reading, Berkshire, at about 2.50pm on Tuesday, Thames Valley police said.

The officers put the woman in the back of the patrol car to take her to hospital but by the time they arrived there two minutes later the woman had a baby in her arms.

A spokeswoman said they did not yet know whether the baby was a boy or a girl but that mother and child appeared to be doing well.
