Firefighters were alerted after a 999 call from another man trapped in an upper flat at the property in the Hendon area, late on Tuesday. Firefighters responded to a 999 call from a man trapped in an upper flat on Northcote Avenue, in the Hendon area, late on Tuesday.
He was rescued by police and taken to hospital, where he is being treated for non life-threatening injuries. After he was rescued, crews entered the badly damaged ground floor flat and discovered a dead man, later named as 35-year-old Kevin Gray.
It was only when fire crews entered the severely damaged ground floor flat that the body of a man, who has not yet been named, was discovered. The cause of the fire is being investigated but it is not thought to be suspicious.
An investigation into the cause of the blaze is under way. The resident of the upstairs flat was taken to hospital for treatment for non life-threatening injuries.
