Bob Dylan has announced details of Shadows in the Night, a studio album featuring interpretations of Frank Sinatra tracks. The collection of 10 songs and standards will be released on 2 February via Columbia Records, and marks the first new music from Dylan in three years.

Produced by Jack Frost, it will be the 36th studio album from Bob Dylan, and follows the release of the rewired Sinatra hit Full Moon and Empty Arms last spring. “It was a real privilege to make this album,” Dylan said in a statement. “I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time, but was never brave enough to approach 30-piece complicated arrangements and refine them down for a five-piece band.”

Recorded live with “maybe one or two takes” and with “no overdubbing. No vocal booths. No headphones. No separate tracking,” the album was mostly mixed as the recording process went along.

Dylan is however, reticent to state that this is a covers album. “I don’t see myself as covering these songs in any way. They’ve been covered enough. Buried, as a matter a fact. What [my band and I] are basically doing is uncovering them. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day.”

The album follows Dylan’s favourably reviewed 2012 release Tempest. He has sold more than 125m records worldwide.
