Grammy nominations: Taylor Swift, Iggy Azalea, Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Pharrell and more Grammy nominations: Taylor Swift, Iggy Azalea, Beyoncé, Sam Smith, Pharrell and more
(35 minutes later)
An extremely tired-looking Pharrell Williams and Ed Sheeran were the first people to announce nominations for a few Grammy categories Friday on “CBS This Morning.” The rest will be announced on Twitter over the course of the day, scavenger hunt-style, and on CBS’s “Very Grammy Christmas” special Friday night. Sam Smith was having a good day on Friday as the Grammy nominations started to roll out (CBS is announcing them all day, scavenger-hunt style). By early afternoon, the British pop sensation already had five nominations, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist.
Taylor Swift, whose record-breaking “1989″ isn’t eligible this year, still scored Record of the Year and Pop Solo Performance nominations for her “sorry, haters” single “Shake It Off” that was released in the eligibility period (Oct. 1, 2013, through Sept. 30, 2014). It’s also shaping up to be a big day for artists including Sam Smith, Iggy Azalea, Beyoncé and Ariana Grande, as many predicted: Each walked away with an album nod. Taylor Swift, whose record-breaking “1989″ isn’t even eligible this year, also scored three nods for Record, Song and Pop Solo Performance for her “sorry, haters” single “Shake It Off.” Newly crowned pop star Meghan Trainor landed three nominations for her body acceptance anthem “All About That Bass”; including Best New Artist alongside Smith, rock band Bastille, country singer/songwriter Brandy Clark and rapper Iggy Azalea. (Who also made the Record of the Year list for inescapable “Fancy.”)
In any case, kicking the daylong nomination announcement off with two very sleepy superstars was a bit embarrassing, as both Sheeran and Williams could not have seemed less excited to be there. Meanwhile, Beyonce made some history: With a Best Urban Contemporary Album nod for her self-titled record, she overtook Dolly Parton as the most-nominated woman in the history of the Grammys, Billboard reported.
“Yay,” Sheeran said when it was revealed his album “x” had a Best Pop Vocal Album nod. Other singers seeing some early success: Pharrell Williams, who got a nod for Urban Contemporary Album and Pop Solo Performance after his smash hit “Happy.” Jack White, with two nominations so far for “Lazaretto.” Eric Church, landing a Country Album of the Year nod along with Country Song nom for “Give Me Back My Hometown.”
“Wow,” Williams said when he landed a Best Urban Contemporary Album nom for “Girl.” The rest will be announced on Twitter over the course of the day, and Album of the Year nominees will be revealed on CBS’s “Very Grammy Christmas” special Friday night. Here are the nominations so far (the list will be continuously updated):
“CBS This Morning” co-host Gayle King called them out for it, and they admitted they were just tired and in fact very excited. Sure! Anyway, here are the nominations so far (the list will be updated throughout the day as more are announced):
