Nigel Farage in case of the wrong trousers with Gogglebox tipplers

The Ukip leader, Nigel Farage, proved he is unable to hold his drink when he smashed a glass of champagne during a boozy encounter with the Gogglebox stars Steph and Dom Parker.

The usually dapper politician, who regularly poses for pictures pint in hand, had to change his trousers after the spillage and ended up borrowing a pair of ripped jeans from Dom.

Farage, who said he smashed the glass because of a “physical incapacity” which is a legacy of his 2010 plane crash, told the Radio Times he had a “rip-roaring” evening with the pair, who have become stars after their tipsy appearances on the Channel 4 show.

He said he had “two pints, about five or six glasses [of wine and champagne]” over the course of the night.

“I like a drink, but crikey, these guys are professionals,” he said.

Farage, who sits as an MEP in Brussels, admitted he had doubts about doing the show.

“Was I taking a risk going in there? Yes, I was … Politics today is so thoroughly overscripted. All the rough edges and all the risk is knocked off, and that is why it has become desperately dull. I thought they were genuine and … people who like me will like it.”
