About 9.2 million people were watching New Year fireworks on BBC One as 2008 began, overnight estimates suggest.

Figures reflecting the audience in the 15 minutes after midnight show another 2.7 million tuned into ITV1, for Take That's concert at London's O2 arena.

A further 2.6 million watched Jools Holland's Annual Hootenanny on BBC Two.

BBC One in England, Wales and Northern Ireland screened fireworks from London, while viewers in Scotland saw the separate Hogmanay Live show.

Several methods are used in the assessment of TV ratings.

Gethin Jones, Nick Knowles and Myleene Klass were on BBC OneAs well as the quarter-hour figures, broadcasters are also given totals reflecting the average audience throughout a whole programme.

When these were taken into account, BBC One's coverage scored an average of 6.3 million viewers, which was about 200,000 higher than last year.

Holland's music programme came second, on 2.9 million.

And the live broadcast of Take That's gig averaged out at 2.4 million, according to the overnight figures.
