Football transfer rumours: Wesley Sneijder ready for Manchester United? Football transfer rumours: Wesley Sneijder ready for Manchester United?
(about 1 hour later)
Al-Walid Ben Talal Ben Abdelaziz Al-Saoud – remember the name. Because word is that he could become the driving force behind European football’s next superpower. A self-made billionaire who worked his way up from the mean streets of Riyadh thanks to nothing but his intelligence, courage and membership of the Saudi royal family, Al-Walid has become even richer than he was when he was born, with only a handful of people on Earth now believed to have more money than him. Now Al-Walid fancies a challenge but not too much of a challenge, obviously. For he is not contemplating taking over Accrington Stanley, Ballyfermot United or FC Honka, but instead Olympique Marseille, one of the biggest clubs in one of the biggest leagues in Europe, albeit one bedevilled by a penchant for chaos and scandal. If Al Walid does try to bring serenity to Marseille, turning OM into OMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, he’ll aim to put Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco in the shade. That won’t bother Monaco’s highly-regarded young left-back Laywin Kurzawa, who is said to be close to sealing a switch to Manchester City and was even due to be flown to the Etihad yesterday to watch the win over Bayern Munich. But best wait until a contract has been signed, Laywin, as you would look a right chump if you started celebrating prematurely, wouldn’t you? Elsewhere, Aston Villa are in dire need of goals but not, apparently, of a goal-scorer. So Darren Bent could be lent out to Brighton. Now that Wesley Sneijder is deemed unworthy of a starting spot in the Galatasaray team, he reckons it might be time to respond favourably at last to Manchester United. Sunday’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur has convinced Steve Bruce that the problem with his team is that it doesn’t have anywhere near enough former Tottenham players in it: so he’ll be inviting Aaron Lennon to join Tom Huddlestone, Jake Livermore, Michael Dawson, Milija Aleksic, Espen Baardsen and Kazuyuki Toda at the KC. Spurs, meanwhile, will battle with Chelsea and Liverpool for the title ... of employer of Mauro Icardi, a 21-year-old striker currently with Internazionale. Liverpool are also preparing to splurge on Petr Cech, Porto’s Jackson Martinez and, just to keep things real, Norwich City’s Nathan Redmond. Finally, Southampton want to buy the most stereotypically Mexican-sounding player they can think of, and the FC Twente striker Jesus Corona fits the bill nicely.
