Pilot dies in aircraft accident

A pilot has been killed after his light aircraft crashed in the Scottish Borders, police have confirmed.

The aircraft crashed near the B6453 at Midlem, three miles east of Selkirk, at about 1550 GMT on Sunday.

Emergency services attended the scene which is in remote farmland area with poor light and accessibility. The area has now been cordoned off.

Lothian and Borders Police said the pilot is thought to have been the only person on board the aircraft.

His details are not being released until relatives are informed.

Insp David Watt, the officer in charge at the scene, said: "I understand the plane had taken off from a local airfield earlier.

"We will be working closely with the Air Accident Investigation Branch in an effort to discover the cause of the crash."
