Hampshire Police have launched an investigation.
A spokesman said: "It was quite a small item that would be about the same size of a lunch box and it contained food colouring.
"The boy took this into school and a teacher drove it into the fire station.
"It would appear this child was pretending it was a home-made explosive. He must have made some sort of threat with it but we can't confirm that at the moment."
