One person has died and four others have been injured in a major crash on one of Scotland's busiest motorways. A man has died and four others have been injured in a crash on one of Scotland's busiest motorways.
Two children were among the injured in the serious accident on the M8 near Harthill Services at noon on Saturday. The 28-year-old van driver was killed on the M8 near Harthill Services at about noon on Saturday.
A stretch of the westbound carriageway was closed for almost eight hours, causing lengthy tailbacks. Police said the van appeared to lose control before colliding with two cars travelling in the opposite direction.
It is thought a car drove through a barrier before crashing into a van. The van is then believed to have collided with another car. An eight-year-old girl and a boy aged 13 are seriously injured in hospital. Two other passengers in the same car were also injured.
Long tailbacks A 71-year-old woman, who was driving the car, and a 43-year-old woman, who was a front seat passenger, are being treated for shoulder injuries.
One of the drivers later died and four others, believed to include a woman and two children, were injured. 'Lost control'
They were taken to different hospitals in Glasgow and one of the children was airlifted to the city's Southern General. The driver of the third vehicle involved was uninjured but badly shaken, police said.
The westbound carriageway was blocked as police worked to clear away the wreckage. The M8 between junctions four and five was closed for several hours on Saturday causing lengthy tailbacks.
There were tailbacks of more than a mile and a half as traffic was diverted through Harthill back to junction 5. A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: "A 28-year-old man was driving his Mercedes van eastbound on the M8 near to junction 5, Harthill, when it appears that the vehicle lost control and collided with a Hyundai car being driven westbound by a 71-year-old woman and a Renault car also being driven westbound, by a man.
The road was re-opened just after 1930 GMT. "Emergency services attended but the 28-year-old driver of the van died at the scene."
