Crash closes stretch of motorway One dead in major motorway crash

A westbound stretch of the M8 has been closed following a serious accident involving three vehicles. One person has died and three others have been injured in a major crash on one of Scotland's busiest motorways.
The road was closed between junctions 4 and 5 near Harthill Services after the crash which happened at about midday. Two children were among the injured in the serious accident on the M8 near Harthill Services at noon on Saturday.
A car is believed to have gone through a barrier and collided with a van. The van is then thought to have hit another car, causing lengthy tailbacks. The crash caused lengthy tailbacks and a stretch of the westbound carriageway was closed for much of the day.
Four ambulances and an air ambulance are attending. The road is expected to be closed for most of the afternoon. It is thought a car drove through a barrier before crashing into a van. The van is then believed to have collided with another car.
Long tailbacks
One of the drivers later died and three people, thought to be a woman and two children, were injured.
They were taken to different hospitals in Glasgow and one of the children was airlifted to the city's Southern General.
The westbound carriageway was blocked as police worked to clear away the wreckage.
There were tailbacks of more than a mile and a half as traffic was diverted through Harthill back to junction 5.
The congestion was worsened as hundreds of Hibs fans were travelling from Edinburgh to Glasgow for the match with Rangers.
