Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn and his wife, Robin Wright Penn, are to divorce after 11 years of marriage, according to reports in the US media. Divorce papers were filed in California on 21 December, with Wright Penn citing irreconcilable differences as a reason for the split. Penn's publicist, Mara Buxbaum, confirmed the divorce to US celebrity magazine People but gave no details. The couple are seeking joint custody of their two teenage children. Penn has been nominated for a best actor Oscar four times, finally winning in 2004 for Mystic River. The actor, who first came to attention as the drug-addled Jeff Spicoli in 1982 teen movie Fast Times At Ridgemont High, has more recently established himself as a director. His road trip movie Into the Wild has received four nominations for next year's Screen Actors Guild Awards, considered to be an early indicator of Oscar success. The 47-year-old was also married to pop star Madonna for four years in the 1980s. Robin Wright Penn, 41, is also a star of the big screen, with acting credits including Beowulf and Forrest Gump. She also starred alongside Jack Nicholson in 2001's The Pledge, which was directed by her husband. |
