A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "Police have launched an investigation into the incident under the direction of the major investigation unit." It is unclear whether the man, who lived locally, attended the party.
Det Ch Insp Steve Bimson, of West Midlands Police, said: "This was just a Christmas party that had been arranged by the people who run the club.
"I'm not sure yet why the victim was in this area and whether he was going to that function or not.
"But from what I can tell the function was a perfectly well-run function and it appears to me a nice club."
He said the people who ran the club were "shocked" by the incident and sent their condolences to the man's family.
