A man whose family has been hit by several tragedies has spoken of his attempts to save his brother's life.

Dewi Evans, 23, from Llandudno, Conwy, died after a car crash on Christmas Eve, despite the efforts of his brothers Jaime and Lee.

Jaime said doctors told him he and Lee saved the life of Dewi's baby daughter Ffion after the collision on the A5.

A fourth brother Llywelyn died on the first day of the Iraq war and their father Gordon passed away in 2005.

Dewi, who was assistant manager at KFC in Llandudno Junction, had been travelling with relatives to a funeral when the crash happened on Monday near Betws-y-Coed, on a stretch of road known as Padog bends.

Jaime, 21, said: "I felt my brother's pulse. It was weak but still there. We got the kids out and we started to work on Dewi.

"Then we couldn't find Ffion, the little baby, she was under Dewi so I gave her a little bit of kiss of life, two seconds, and then she came right back."

We were strong for the kids, we opened the presents and that it what Dewi would have wanted. We had to be there for the kids. Jaime Evans

Jaime and Lee had then tried to help their brother.

Jaime said: "The doctor says that me and Lee obviously saved Ffion's life and at least we gave Dewi 24 hours to say goodbye to his kids."

Dewi had been a passenger in a Volvo and was airlifted to hospital in Bangor following the collision, which also involved a Volkswagen Passat.

Two women and two children were treated for minor injuries following the crash which is being investigated by North Wales Police.

Jaime said of his brother: "He loved his wife Yvonne, he loved his two kids, Catrin and Ffion.

"And he would do the same. If he had the choice of him passing away or any of his family he'd always choose himself."

Jaime said he has drawn comfort from the fact he helped save Ffion's life and added: " If I ever want to see Dewi or touch Dewi I've got two lovely nieces who I can give a hug."

For the sake of the children, the family had made a special effort on Boxing Day to gather together and have Christmas dinner.

He said: "We were strong for the kids, we opened the presents and that is what Dewi would have wanted. We had to be there for the kids."

Paying tribute to Dewi as "the life and soul of the party", he said: "He had a kind heart and he was lovely...If you only met him once, you'd always remember him for his smile."

The tragedy comes almost four years after the death of Llywelyn when his American Sea Knight helicopter crashed in the Kuwaiti desert.

Exactly two years later, their father Gordon died from liver failure.

An inquest was later told Gordon Evans's life had "disintegrated" after his son's death and he had returned to drinking.

Dewi Evans's wife of two-and-a-half years, Yvonne, has also paid tribute to her husband.

She said: "He was a loving father and brother and would do anything for the children."
