Rising water trapped dead cavers

The 33-year-old man from Darlington and 28-year-old woman from West Yorkshire were found in the Alum Pot cave, in Selside, near Horton in Ribblesdale. Rescue teams searched through the night on Thursday after a woman reported her husband had failed to return home. Phil Haig, from the Cave Rescue Organisation, led a team of 20 and said the pair were trapped by rising water. He added that it was a difficult job to be involved in. "Like most of these tragic events, it's a job that has to be done and it's done willingly by members," he said. "It's just a really tragic accident that's made all the more poignant by the time of year." A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the bodies were found at about 0320 GMT on Friday. |
