A police station had to be boarded up over Christmas after vandals smashed six windows.

Some residents in Nefyn, Gwynedd, had been worried that the station - which is not staffed full time - had been closed permanently.

Former councillor Elfed Morgan said he had been shocked to see it boarded up.

North Wales Police said they were investigating the incident, and the windows would be replaced before the end of the week.

"It was a shock and a complete mystery to everyone when it was boarded up on Christmas Eve," said Mr Morgan.

"So many rural police stations have closed we were all worried that this one was being closed too."

The station is used as a base by community police officers based on the Lleyn peninsula, and the windows were broken between Sunday night and Monday morning.

"The windows were boarded up because it was Christmas Eve but we are now waiting for someone to replace them," the spokeswoman added.
