Version 0 of 1.

A motorist suffered life threatening injuries after a crash thought to have been caused by a car travelling the wrong way down a dual carriageway.

The collision happened on the A417 in Gloucestershire after witnesses saw a car heading towards oncoming traffic.

The crash involved a Vauxhall Corsa and a Vauxhall Astra, but police are not certain which car was being driven in the wrong direction.

The Astra driver, from Stroud, suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.

Witnesses sought

Another man, from Swindon, who was driving a Vauxhall Corsa, was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The seriously injured man, who is in his 30s, is being treated in a high-dependency unit in hospital.

Insp Tony Rymer, of Gloucestershire Police, said: "His injuries are very serious. Our initial assessment was that his injuries were life-threatening or life-changing and at the moment we see no reason to change that view.

"It is suggested that one of the vehicles may have been travelling on the wrong side of the road.

"Both parties were taken to hospital and will be questioned in due course."

Police are seeking witnesses to the crash, which happened at about 1930 GMT on Christmas Day near the Burford Road junction of the A417.
