A young boy has died after a car crashed into him and his family on their way to school in Northern Ireland .

The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that eight-year-old Adam Gilmour died in hospital on Tuesday from injuries sustained in the collision.

He was on his way to school along the Loughill Road in the Co Antrim village of Cloughmills when the collision occurred at about 8.30am. His mother and four of his siblings were being treated for injuries in two hospitals in Co Antrim.

The PSNI also confirmed that an 18-year-old man was arrested in relation to the incident.

Stephen McCauley, the PSNI area commander for Ballymena, said: “The child was with his mother and siblings en route to school when the collision happened at around 8.35am. He sadly passed away later in hospital.”

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service sent four ambulances, a rapid-response paramedic and an ambulance officer to the scene.

The woman was in a serious condition at the Causeway hospital in Coleraine, while the children were taken to Antrim Area hospital.

The local Democratic Unionist party councillor, John Finlay, said it was a “horrific tragedy”.

Philip McGuigan, a Sinn Féin councillor, said: “This is a terrible tragedy facing the community in Cloughmills. Many people are undoubtedly shocked by the news.

“I can say that this feeling is only amplified by the fact that it was young children walking to school with their mother who were at the centre of this accident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and their wider circle at this time.”
