Man seriously hurt in house fire Man, 68, dies after house blaze
(about 5 hours later)
A 68-year-old man is in hospital with serious burns after a fire at a house in Conwy in north Wales. A 68-year-old man has died in hospital after a fire at a house in Conwy in north Wales, says the fire service.
Fire crews and four appliances were called to Penmaen Crescent maisonettes just after midnight on Wednesday. Four fire appliances with crews from Conwy, Llandudno and Colwyn Bay were called to deal with the blaze in Morfa in the early hours of Boxing Day.
The man has been taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital at Bodelwyddan. A number of adjoining properties were affected and people in them were forced to leave. Neighbours rescued the man from the house after they were alerted to the fire by a loud bang.
A joint investigation involving North Wales Police and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is under way. The man was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, but later died. The fire's cause is under investigation.
A number of properties adjoining the house in Penmaen Crescent were also affected, and people living in them were forced to leave the maisonettes, which are owned by Conwy council.
It is not just about having a smoke detector, it's about educating on how to be safe Deputy Chief Fire Officer Chris Enness
Deputy Chief Fire Officer for North Wales, Chris Enness, said the incident highlighted the importance of people having working smoke detectors and a fire plan.
Mr Enness said the joint investigation with police would try to find out where the smoke detection system was working, as well as the cause of the bang which alerted the man's neighbours.
He added:"This is the fourth serious incident of this type in the last two months, which have now tragically resulted in three deaths.
"If people take up our offer of a free home safety check these types of incidents would not happen. A home fire safety check will save your life and the lives of those you love.
"It is not just about having a smoke detector, it's about educating on how to be safe and how to recognise the risks and hazards that are ever present in the home.
