Version 0 of 1.

A crash on the A1 left a woman dead, two men seriously injured and hundreds stranded for up to seven hours.

Three lorries and two cars were involved in a pile-up at 07:45 GMT near North Muskham in Nottinghamshire, police said.

The woman who died was aged in her 60s. The injured men were taken to hospital by air ambulance.

The northbound carriageway reopened before 09:00, but drivers heading south were trapped for hours.

Nottinghamshire Police said two men, one in his seventies and the other in his thirties, remain in Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre in a serious condition.

Nicola Gilroy, a presenter on BBC Radio Lincolnshire, was one of the drivers trapped on the road.

She said cars were turned round after about six hours and drove back along the northbound carriageway. She missed her show and did not get off the road until about 14:00.

The road reopened shortly before 15:00 but the Highways Agency said congestion was expected until about 17:00.
