ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — At least 57 people were killed and 18 were injured on Tuesday when a passenger bus rammed into a truck in southern Pakistan, officials and rescue workers said.

The dead included 12 children, rescue workers said.

The accident took place on the National Highway in the Khairpur district of Sindh Province around 6 a.m. Police officials said the driver of the bus had lost control on a section of the road in poor condition. The bus crossed over to the other lane, colliding with a truck that was headed in the opposite direction.

Officials of the National Highways and Motorway police said the responsibility of maintenance of roads lay with National Highway Authority. The National Highway in Sindh province is broken on large tracts and is riddled with unauthorized U-turns, resulting in traffic congestion and accidents.

The injured were shifted to Civil Hospital in Khairpur, and seven of them were in a critical condition, according to Jaffer Soomro, the medical superintendent of the hospital.
