Fourteen sailors are missing after a South Korean freighter sank in rough seas off the coast of South Korea, coast guard officials have said.

The Eastern Bright, carrying nitric acid, sent a distress signal off the southern port of Yeosu at around 0420 (1920 GMT Monday), officials said.

One sailor from Burma has been found but 12 South Korean and two Burmese crew members are still missing.

The acid poses no pollution risk as it dilutes easily, officials said.

The Eastern Bright was carrying 2,000 tons of the acid from South Korea to Taiwan when it went down.

Workers are still cleaning up beaches on South Korea's west coast after the country's worst oil spill caused when a drifting barge holed a tanker in early December.
