Version 0 of 1.

Running back Adrian Peterson is going to play soon for the Minnesota Vikings, but just how soon is unclear.

Peterson, who has been paid while occupying a spot on the commissioner’s exempt list before completing a plea deal in his child abuse case, wants to play soon. And the NFL Players Association is behind him.

The union requested immediate reinstatement for Peterson, ESPN reported, and could file a grievance as early as Monday. A copy of the original letter placing Peterson on the exempt list was obtained by Pro Football Talk and in it NFLPA general counsel Tom DePaso writes to NFL general counsel Jeff Pash:

“The player agrees that, effective as of yesterday (September 17, 2014), he is placed on the Commissioner-Exempt list with full pay until the criminal charges currently pending against him are adjudicated.  No discipline will be processed or imposed against the player, by the Club or the League, until after the pending criminal charges are adjudicated.”

The letter, PFT says, was signed by DePaso and Pash. Peterson’s case was adjudicated last week. He pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor in connection with spanking his 4-year-old with a switch, will pay a $4,000 fine and do 80 hours of community service. Peterson has not played since the second game of the season and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that he faces a six-game suspension under the personal-conduct policy. However, that is likely to be reduced. The Vikings have a bye this week.

When Peterson was initially arrested, there were questions about whether the Vikings would want him back at all. That still remains the case now, Rapoport reports.
