A Heathrow spokeswoman said the knock-on delays are caused by a combination of the backlog of passengers waiting to board flights, and the fact that when a plane is unable to leave an airport, the plane scheduled to arrive behind it is held at the airport it was due to depart from.
A BAA spokesman said the cancellations on Monday were the result of aircraft and crew being in the wrong places following the problems caused by the fog.
