Man in court over 'terror plans' Terror suspect appears in court
(about 22 hours later)
A man charged with preparing a terror attack is due to appear in court. A 38-year-old man has appeared in court charged with preparing a terror attack.
The 38-year-old from Birmingham's Small Heath district was charged on 22 December with one offence under section five of the Terrorism Act 2006. Hassan Muhammed Sabri Al Tabbakh, of Small Heath, Birmingham, is accused of compiling bomb-making instructions and stockpiling chemicals for a device.
He is due to appear again at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Christmas Eve. Mr Al Tabbakh, who is of Syrian origin, appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in London earlier.
A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "Although the threat from terrorism is real, there is no cause for concern over this matter." The defendant, who was arrested near his home in Birmingham on Tuesday, was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on 4 January.
The spokesman added: "The charge relates to the alleged engagement in conduct for the preparation of an intention to commit an act of terrorism." The suspect was charged on Saturday with one offence under section five of the Terrorism Act 2006.
Police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the alleged crime, he said. Mr Al Tabbakh did not apply for bail.
