Jerusalem: Victim of Palestinian van attack dies Israel to destroy homes of Palestinian Jerusalem car attackers
(about 1 hour later)
An Israeli seriously wounded when a Palestinian driver attacked pedestrians in Jerusalem on Wednesday has died. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the demolition of the homes of Palestinians in Jerusalem who have carried out attacks on Israelis.
Another person was also killed and eight were injured when the man rammed his car into people at a tram stop. The decision, taken on Thursday, follows weeks of unrest in the city.
He hit police officers with an iron bar before being shot dead. Militants Hamas said they carried out the attack. Four people have now died in two separate attacks on pedestrians in Jerusalem in the past three weeks.
Meanwhile several explosions in Gaza targeted homes and cars of officials from Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement. No-one was hurt. The latest incident occurred on Wednesday when a Palestinian driver rammed his car into a tram station.
Fatah official Fayez Abu Eitta said his car was destroyed and the homes of two other officials were damaged in the blasts early on Friday. One person was killed at the scene and another died from his injuries on Friday morning.
Hamas, which controls Gaza, condemned the attacks, but Fatah spokesman Ahmad Assaf accused the group of carrying them out. Hamas said it carried out the attack, while Israel blamed Hamas and the Fatah faction of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, both of which formed a unity government earlier this year.
The two factions have been at odds since Hamas reinforced its power in Gaza in 2007 after ousting its Fatah rivals. The groups formed a unity government in April, but it has not been fully implemented on the ground and tensions between the sides remain. Meanwhile several small explosions in Gaza targeted the homes and cars of Fatah officials.
No-one was hurt, but Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah cancelled his trip to Gaza because of the attacks.

The man declared dead on Friday after the Jerusalem attack was identified as 17-year-old Shalom Baadani, a Jewish seminary student. A spokesman for Mr Netanyahu said he had met with security officials on Thursday evening to discuss measures to restore calm in Jerusalem.
"Among those discussed was the sealing or demolition of terrorists' homes," the spokesman said.
Israel's Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef urged Israelis to stop attempting to enter parts of Jerusalem's main holy site, the al-Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount complex, in order to avoid increased tension.
"We need to stop this, only then will the blood of the people of Israel not be spilt," he said.
Further clashes broke out in parts of East Jerusalem on Friday morning, including near the Shuafat neighbourhood.
