Second arrest after officer shot Man accused of police murder bid
(1 day later)
A second man has been arrested after a police officer was shot during a surveillance operation in south-east London early on Saturday. A man aged 19 has been charged with trying to kill a police officer who was shot during a surveillance operation in south-east London early on Saturday.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the officer was "very lucky" to escape with only a cut hand when he was hit on New Cross Road. Police said Joel Johnson, of Hatcham Park Road, Lewisham, south-east London, would appear at Greenwich Magistrates Court on Monday.
He was in an unmarked police car, following a suspect as part of an investigation into crime in nightclubs. He is accused of attempted murder and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.
The gunman got out of a vehicle and fired at the officer, police said. The unnamed undercover officer who was shot sustained an injury to his hand.
The arrested men are aged 20 and 19. One was held at the scene of the shooting and the second man was arrested later on Saturday. A second man, aged 20, was arrested later and has been released on police bail, Scotland Yard said.
An automatic handgun has been recovered.
Commander Shaun Sawyer from the Violent Crime Directorate said: "This is another example of the challenges officers and colleagues face on a daily basis.
"The bravery and professionalism shown by these and thousands more like them is a credit to the Met and the people we serve."
The shot officer's name has not been released.
