Protests broke out in Indian-administered Kashmir on Tuesday, a day after Indian soldiers fatally shot two people in a car that did not stop at a checkpoint. They and two others who were wounded were all civilians. Crowds of protesters in the main city, Srinagar, chanted anti-Indian slogans and threw stones at officials, and separatist organizations called for a strike on Wednesday. The Indian soldiers were on high alert after a huge explosion on Sunday on the Pakistan side of the border that killed 50 people. Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir State, described the deaths as “avoidable” and discussed the matter with India’s defense minister, Arun Jaitley.
