A man has been arrested after a police officer was shot during a surveillance operation in south-east London.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the officer was "very lucky" to escape with only a cut hand when he was hit on New Cross Road at 0115 GMT on Saturday.

He was in an unmarked police car, following a suspect as part of an investigation into crime in London's nightclubs.

The gunman got out of a vehicle and fired at the officer, police said.

The officer's name has not been released.
