Two off-duty police officers dressed as Batman and Wonder Woman came to the rescue of colleagues as they tackled late-night incidents in Bridgend.

Off-duty constables Ben Day and Laura Hicks stepped in to help Chief Insp Simon Belcher and other officers to disperse a town centre crowd.

In a scene reminiscent of Only Fools and Horses, the "superhero" officers eased the tension and raised a smile.

Fifteen minutes later and the dynamic duo were back on their night out.

Ch Insp Simon Belcher said the caped crusaders came to his aid in the early hours of last Saturday night.

"We were in the middle of one of those really busy periods for about an hour or so and we were dealing with a few incidents," he said.

"There was a crowd of about 12 or 15 people starting to gather and the next thing I heard a voice behind me saying 'need any help boss?'

"When I turned around there was Batman and Wonder Woman!

"Their costumes were brilliant and they were helping us out by talking to the crowd and dispersing it and all with good humour."

He said the two officers had been on a social night out and stepped into help their colleagues.

"They didn't have to come over and help but they did," said Ch Insp Belcher.

"It was a bit like that episode of Only Fools and Horses.

"But Batman was 6ft 2in and wearing the modern costume, not the 1960s style one.

"He wasn't quite like Del Boy.

"I don't think a couple of people could believe what they were seeing, but it really helped because people took it in good humour."

Ch Insp Belcher, who has only been in his current post at Bridgend for two months said he was grateful for the efforts of the two off-duty officers.

"My four-year-old son was very impressed when I told him I had been to work with Batman," he laughed.
