Moray councillors have agreed a five-year moratorium on the closure of any rural schools.

It has also been decided that none of the area's eight secondary schools should close.

Parents and pupils had protested against the planned changes, which involved as many as 10 primary schools.

Councillors agreed to formally recognise the efforts of communities across Moray in campaigning in support of their local schools.

The proposals were debated for about three hours on Monday.

Last Sunday, hundreds of people had turned out at a protest rally over plans to close Milne's High School in Fochabers.

It was later followed by pupils and parents marching in Elgin against plans to merge Findochty Primary School with another school in Portknockie, Portessie or Cullen as part of the 10-year improvement plan.
