All departing flights have been stopped for the past hour, while arrivals are being diverted to other airports. All departing flights were stopped from about 1700 GMT, while arrivals were diverted to other airports, including Bournemouth and Birmingham.
Passengers were advised to contact airlines for more information, an airport spokesperson said. The last departure of the night was due to leave for Edinburgh at 2025 GMT.
All Flybe flights in and out of the airport have been cancelled, they added. It is not known how long the delays might continue. Passengers travelling on Saturday have been asked to contact their airlines for more information, an airport spokesperson said.
"A lot of the aircraft have elected to stay at their origin airport, meaning the aircraft may not be here to leave in the morning" they added.
"Please contact your airline for re-booking and information for tomorrow."
