France was treating a United Nations employee who contracted the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone, the health ministry said in a statement posted Sunday on its website. The statement said the patient, who “worked in the fight against Ebola,” was transferred to a military hospital near Paris, after being evacuated “by special aircraft.” He was placed in isolation “under high security,” it added. There are no other confirmed cases of Ebola in France, the ministry said. A spokesman for the health ministry said the patient was “a foreign citizen” but would not disclose his identity. In September, France evacuated from Liberia a French nurse who had contracted the virus, and has since recovered. About 5,000 people have died during the current Ebola outbreak, mainly in the West African countries Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, according to recent figures provided by the World Health Organization. |
