The police escort leading the early wave of team buses missed the exit ramp, according to members of the team. The first bus, traveling at about 25 mph, managed to stop in time to avoid hitting the cruiser, which had spun sideways and was in jeopardy of being T-boned by the first bus, according to coach Jay Gruden, who was riding in the seat behind the bus driver. The police escort leading the early wave of team buses missed the exit ramp, according to members of the team. But the second bus rear-ended the first bus, which then swerved off to the left and went up and partially over an embankment and then stopped before slipping down a steep drop. But the second bus rear-ended the first bus, which then swerved off to the left and went up and partially over an embankment and then stopped before slipping down a steep drop.

After the game, Gruden said the experience was significant but didn’t affect the outcome.
“It was a unique way to start the day for a football game, and we were about five feet from driving off a cliff,” Gruden said. “It was an experience that would shake a lot of people, honestly, but it’s not an excuse.”
Quarterback Robert Griffin III rode in the second bus and sat in the front row next to fullback Darrel Young.
“That was a scary moment, honestly,” Griffin said. “We probably had half a second, if that, to react on that bus. As the guys that were sitting up front on that bus, [Young] and myself, we saw the bus hit the bus and we both thought we were going to fly out the window shield. Everybody got a little bit of whiplash, I believe. We bumped our knees on the front of the little guard because we were sitting up front.
“But it was scary, man. It was scary to be in that situation. You don’t expect to be in that – being on a bus on the way to a game, to get in a wreck, especially a wreck that catastrophic had the bus driver on the other bus not saved everybody. . . . We were grateful to be able to come out here and be able to play a game. A lot of guys had their lives flash before their eyes. Not a good moment.”
“Fortunately no one was seriously hurt,” wide receiver DeSean Jackson said. “I wasn’t on that bus. I’m usually on the second bus. Definitely frightening for guys to be on that and to witness something like that on the way to the game. . . . But we have to continue on and play a game. That’s our jobs.”
