Mali: French Commando Dies in Fighting

France said Wednesday that a French soldier and about 20 Islamist militants had been killed during a fierce clash in northern Mali near the Algerian border earlier in the day. The offices of President François Hollande and Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian both confirmed the death of Sgt. Thomas Dupuy, who was in a parachute commando unit of the air force. A Defense Ministry source said French forces had launched an operation over the weekend against militants who had returned to the region after being driven out last year.
