Manchester City v Newcastle United: Capital One Cup – as it happened
Version 0 of 1. 10.07pm GMT22:07 What a great draw that was. Expertly completed. Night! 10.07pm GMT22:07 Sheffield United v Southampton 10.06pm GMT22:06 Bournemouth v Liverpool 10.06pm GMT22:06 Tottenham v Newcastle 10.05pm GMT22:05 Derby County v Chelsea 10.05pm GMT22:05 Here comes the draw for the quarter-final. 10.03pm GMT22:03 Manuel Pellegrini confirms that David Silva has a knee injury but adds that he doesn’t know the extent of it, while he doesn’t think that the groin problem that forced Yaya Toure to go off is too bad. 9.52pm GMT21:52 Tottenham have beaten Brighton 2-0. The draw comes next. 9.45pm GMT21:45 Stick around, I’ll cover the draw for the quarter-finals in a minute. Southampton have won 3-2 at Stoke and Tottenham lead Brighton 2-0. 9.45pm GMT21:45 Another shocking result for Manchester City, the holders crashing out after another sluggish performance. They had a lot of pressure and dominance and missed chances but they cannot really argue that they deserved to go through. It was Newcastle’s night. They worked their socks off and played as well as they have done for a long time under Alan Pardew. Goals from Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko put the seal on a famous Geordie night. 9.42pm GMT21:42 Full-time: Manchester City 0-2 Newcastle ! The holders are out. ! “See, total waste of time!” says Alex Gregory. 9.40pm GMT21:40 90 min+5: Elliot catches Navas’s cross. That should be that. 9.36pm GMT21:36 90 min+1: There will be six minutes of added time. Ameobi is booked for fouling Fernandinho. “What makes this Newcastle result even more impressive is that they’ve managed to score two goals using a non-HiViz football,” says Fraser Thomas. “Incredible.” 9.35pm GMT21:35 89 min: Newcastle almost snatch a third! A high free-kick was hung to the far post, giving Sagna and Caballero the chance to make a three-course dog’s dinner of clearing it, allowing Ameobi to turn the ball into the six-yard box, but Riviere couldn’t reach it in time to tap into an empty net. 9.33pm GMT21:33 88 min: Graziano Pelle makes it Stoke 2-3 Southampton; Harry Kane makes it Tottenham 2-0 Brighton. 9.32pm GMT21:32 87 min: City are really turning the screw now. It may be too late. 9.32pm GMT21:32 86 min: What a finale this is. Now Jovetic pops up on the left and pulls the ball back into the area for Navas, who sidefoots an incompetent shot wide when it looked easier to score. 9.31pm GMT21:31 85 min: Suddenly City have woken up and Dzeko should score but doesn’t! Aguero surged through the middle and fed Navas on the right. His low cross went all the way to the far post to Dzeko, six yards out. “He’s going to score,” I said. But Taylor threw himself in the way of Dzeko’s shot to block it on the line and behind for a corner! That’s amazing. 9.29pm GMT21:29 84 min: Milner is booked for a foul on Attwell, who has somehow managed not to give himself a stern talking-to after his non-award of that Newcastle penalty. 9.28pm GMT21:28 83 min: Sagna has a quick stroll on Ameobi’s back. Weirdly Ameobi doesn’t appreciate it. City are becoming increasingly petulant. 9.26pm GMT21:26 82 min: Mame Biram Diouf makes it Stoke 2-2 Southampton. Stoke were 2-0 down. 9.26pm GMT21:26 81 min: A Fernandinho shot deflects off Aguero and runs to Milner, whose cross is far too hard. Newcastle survive. 9.24pm GMT21:24 79 min: The next 11 minutes or so should be an appreciation of Pardiola. 9.23pm GMT21:23 78 min: A stoppage in play as Haidara receives treatment for a head injury after clashing with Ameobi. It seems he hurt his jaw. “The ref’s association should punish Attwell by making go watch an Ed Sheeran concert,” says Fraser Thomas. 9.22pm GMT21:22 77 min: Newcastle’s fans are doing the Poznan. 9.20pm GMT21:20 GOAL! Manchester City 0-2 Newcastle (Sissoko, 76 min) What a goal from Moussa Sissoko! Newcastle are in the clear and they’re not complaining about Stuart Attwell now! It came from persistence from Riviere, who wouldn’t give Demichelis a moment’s rest on the left. The ball came to Sissoko on the edge of the area and he brilliantly tricked his way past a limp challenge from Fernandinho, burst past Sagna and then flicked a cracking finish past the onrushing Caballero with the outside of his right foot. What on earth is happening to City? Updated at 9.34pm GMT 9.20pm GMT21:20 75 min: Sergio Aguero is booked for stopping Newcastle from taking a quick free-kick. He’d have got away with it if he’d just stamped on someone, of course. 9.19pm GMT21:19 74 min: Actually, Kolarov takes it. He gets it over the wall but it’s straight at Elliot, whose handling is assured. 9.18pm GMT21:18 73 min: Colback pulls Aguero down around 25 yards from goal. Newcastle are clearly going to lose this now. Jovetic wants the free-kick. 9.17pm GMT21:17 71 min: Sergio Aguero replaces Samir Nasri. The substitute becomes the substituted. How ironic. 9.17pm GMT21:17 70 min: At least Attwell has the good grace to book Mangala for a foul a few seconds later. Dearie me, that penalty decision, though. It was so obvious, a painfully obvious foul by Kolarov, who would have had to go as he was the last man. 9.16pm GMT21:16 69 min: Stuart Attwell, take a bow. The refereeing legend has done it again. Newcastle broke up the left through Ameobi, who cut inside and then played a delicious pass through to Obertan, who was clean through on goal. At least, he would have been if Kolarov hadn’t desperately slid in from behind and taken him out inside the area. Penalty? Red card? Nope. Nope. Attwell completely bottles it. He is a total disgrace. Newcastle are livid. That was, as they say, stonewall. Maybe he should award City a goal for that. 9.14pm GMT21:14 67 min: Erik Lamela has done it against big opposition again. Tottenham lead Brighton 1-0. 9.13pm GMT21:13 66 min: Remember when Neil Warnock said that the reason Crystal Palace lost to Newcastle in the last round was because they announced over the tannoy that the winner would face Manchester City in the next round while the game was still going on? 9.10pm GMT21:10 65 min: Newcastle bring on Moussa Sissoko for Daryl Janmaat and Emmanuel Riviere for Adam Armstrong. 9.08pm GMT21:08 63 min: When does the siege begin? 9.06pm GMT21:06 61 min: Abeid is down clutching his face after a collision with Mangala, who led with his arm when he challenged the Newcastle midfielder. 9.05pm GMT21:05 60 min: Jesus Navas replaces Yaya Toure, who has had an inauspicious evening. At least he got an ostentatious pat on the back from Alan Pardew as he walked off. That would cheer anyone up. 9.02pm GMT21:02 57 min: I’m not saying that City aren’t going to score but at the moment they look like they have other things on their mind. 9.00pm GMT21:00 55 min: Obertan rattles a fine finish high past Caballero and into the City net but he was offside by half a yard and the flag had long gone up. 9.00pm GMT21:00 54 min: Kolarov booms a cross out of play. It could be time for Aguero. City have been flat since the restart. What is it with them? Sometimes they simply look like they can’t be bothered. 8.58pm GMT20:58 52 min: A free-kick to City on the left. They decide it’s time for one off the training ground and it almost works beautifully. Milner swiftly moves the ball to Kolarov on the left but his cross flashes right across the face of goal, with no one able to apply a telling touch to it. 8.55pm GMT20:55 50 min: Kolarov has had his elbow strapped up and it looks like he’s going to risk it. 8.54pm GMT20:54 49 min: Kolarov appears to have hurt his elbow. City are starting to resemble the walking wounded. 8.52pm GMT20:52 47 min: Stoke are back in it against Southampton, Steven N’Zonzi halving the deficit and making it 2-1 at the start of the second half. 8.51pm GMT20:51 46 min: Off we go again. City get the ball rolling in the second half. Sammy Ameobi has replaced Rolando Aarons at half-time but fails to score within seven seconds of his introduction, suggesting that he’s past it after Sunday’s exploits. 8.36pm GMT20:36 Half-time: Manchester City 0-1 Newcastle ALL HAIL PARDIOLA. 8.36pm GMT20:36 45 min+5: Newcastle have been at their most dangerous when winning the ball high up the pitch. City lose the ball again and Janmaat rams a lovely cross towards the near post. Armstrong slides in and the ball deflects on to him via his marker and cannons just past the post! 8.33pm GMT20:33 45 min+2: Before the corner can be taken, Abeid holds it up by pointing out that he needs to tie his laces. City aren’t happy about the delay. Milner eventually loses patience and takes the corner, but Stuart Attwell decides he should wait for Abeid and have another go. Milner curls it in again and Mangala heads over. 8.32pm GMT20:32 45 min+1: Toure chases a lost cause and manages to win a corner on the right. “Who says nothing changes?” says JR in Illinois. “I see Pardew writing in his notebook. I think that instead of speaking directly to Pellegrini he is constructing a letter to him. I believe I was able to make out that it begins with a capital “F”.” 8.31pm GMT20:31 45 min: There will be four more minutes for Newcastle to hold on. 8.29pm GMT20:29 43 min: Kolarov’s cross hits Abeid and loops towards the far post. Elliot pushes it over. From the corner, Dzeko heads wide. 8.28pm GMT20:28 42 min: Yaya Toure pops up in a bit of space 25 yards out. He jinks back on to his left foot and sends a stinging drive towards the bottom-right corner. But Elliot pushes it away. City continue to press. How much more of this can Newcastle withstand? 8.26pm GMT20:26 40 min: Oh yeah. Sergio Aguero is on the bench for City. Just in case any Newcastle fans were getting excited. 8.24pm GMT20:24 38 min: Newcastle are in danger of not disgracing themselves for the first time in a cup tie in the Pardew era. They’re trying. They’re actually trying! 8.22pm GMT20:22 35 min: Toure is on his feet again. He appears to have made a full recovery. 8.20pm GMT20:20 34 min: Having already lost Silva to an injury, the last thing City need is to see Toure down after taking a whack to his ankle from Abeid. The physio is on again. 8.19pm GMT20:19 33 min: Willy Caballero makes a tremendous save to deny Newcastle a second goal! The corner found its way to the far post, City’s marking all over the shop, and to Dummett, whose sidefooted volley was saved by Caballero with his legs! It nearly snuck underneath him. But it didn’t. The rebound is cleared before Coloccini can pounce on it. 8.17pm GMT20:17 32 min: Now Obertan speeds down the right, City having committed men forward. He does well to win a corner without much support in the middle. Meanwhile Southampton now lead 2-0 at Stoke, Shane Long scoring his first goal for the club. 8.17pm GMT20:17 31 min: Newcastle enter a strange, foreign land known as the Manchester City half, and find they quite like it. A Mangala error presents the ball to Obertan 30 yards out but his shot is tame. 8.15pm GMT20:15 28 min: Another chance goes to waste for City. They kept attacking after the corner was cleared and Milner clipped a cross into the area from the right. Dzeko flicked it to the far post and Jovetic rushed a panicky volley high and wide. He could have brought that down. 8.13pm GMT20:13 27 min: City hit the post! Well, Coloccini hits the post for City! Kolarov slammed a low cross into the area and Coloccini took a desperate swing at the ball and sent it flying past a bemused Elliot, who was relieved to see it ping off the left post and go behind for a corner. Updated at 8.57pm GMT 8.11pm GMT20:11 26 min: Now Attwell does have his notebook out. Paul Dummett, Uruguayan favourite, is on the naughty step after taking out Jovetic on the halfway line. 8.10pm GMT20:10 24 min: Jovetic shoots from 25 yards. It does not go in. “I’m a bit worried what’s going to happen when it gets to the 70th minute and Pardew realises he can’t substitute his left back regardless of the game situation, as he has already started 3 of them,” says Ben Monk. 8.10pm GMT20:10 23 min: Haidara flattens Sagna on the right but Stuart Attwell plays the advantage. You assume he’ll go back to book Haidara when he gets a chance. It was a bad tackle. But for the time being, all the attention is on Dzeko in the Newcastle area. He drops a shoulder to come inside for a shot, but Coloccini blocks it. Right. Time for Stuart Attwell to book Haidara. He beckons him over. Tells him off. And ... oh. Right. He’s not booked him. Because he is Stuart Attwell. 8.08pm GMT20:08 22 min: Daryl Janmaat is allowed to advance deep into City territory, no one bothering to get close to him. So he decides to have a shot. And it’s not bad. But Caballero saves. “A Richard Dunne own-goal, you say?” says Matt Dony. “You’re right, Jacob. Nothing ever changes.” 8.07pm GMT20:07 20 min: Newcastle are still winning. Somehow. City took a short corner on the right and Milner teed up Nasri for a cross which he swung viciously to the far post. It fell to Jovetic, who looked certain to score but his instinctive effort was Elliot brilliantly claws it out. Jovetic tries to turn the rebound goalwards, twice, but Colback is in the way both times. Eventually Newcastle scramble the ball away. What an escape. 8.04pm GMT20:04 18 min: Kolarov hangs a cross into the area. It’s too high for City but Newcastle make a mess of getting the ball clear. And City come again. A neat interchange ends with Jovetic glimpsing the goal from 18 yards but he snatches his shot and it dribbles wide. 8.01pm GMT20:01 15 min: Fernandinho slashes a shot miles wide from 30 yards. Further to that stat a moment ago, this is the first time Newcastle have led on this ground since Obafemi Martins scored the opener in what ended up as a 3-1 win for City on 29 September 2007. 8.00pm GMT20:00 14 min: This is the first time Newcastle have led against Manchester City since a Richard Dunne own-goal put them 2-1 up at St James’s Park on Monday 20 October 2008. But that game ended 2-2 after a late Robinho equaliser for City. 7.58pm GMT19:58 13 min: Despite Taylor’s interest, he swings his free-kick straight into the wall. Oh well. 7.58pm GMT19:58 12 min: City create more problems for themselves. Demichelis, in acres of space, sends a cheap header straight to the electric Aarons, who charges at the City defence before being clipped from behind by Sagna. Newcastle have a free-kick 25 yards from goal. Ryan Taylor is interested. 7.56pm GMT19:56 11 min: Meanwhile it’s Stoke 0-1 Southampton. Graziano Pelle has scored again for the relegation strugglers. 7.55pm GMT19:55 10 min: “What’s changed?” says Ben Monk. “I’ve had a haircut.” And about time too, you bloody hippy. 7.55pm GMT19:55 9 min: Silva, feeling his left knee, walks off to be replaced by Samir Nasri. I suppose there are worse substitutions. Updated at 8.19pm GMT 7.54pm GMT19:54 8 min: It goes from bad to worse for City. Silva is down again and he’ll have to go off. They could have done without that with the Manchester derby coming up on Sunday. 7.53pm GMT19:53 INCREDIBLE! Manchester City 0-1 Newcastle (Aarons, 6 min) Rolando Aarons, 18 years old, gives Newcastle an unlikely lead! Wow. Manchester City will be furious with themselves. It was all their own fault. Facing his own goal in the middle of the City half, Fernandinho dawdled on the ball and was tackled by Taylor. The ball span down the inside-right channel to Aarons, who was on it in a flash, with Mangala not alive to the danger. Mangala couldn’t get close enough and Aarons slid a delightful finish through Caballero’s legs from an angle. Newcastle have the lead against Manchester City for the first time since I can’t remember. Updated at 8.17pm GMT 7.51pm GMT19:51 5 min: It looks like Kolarov is going to take it. But then Toure takes it and, so far, it’s not been his season. He whips it well over the bar and Silva jogs back on. He still doesn’t look entirely happy, glancing behind him at the bench. 7.50pm GMT19:50 4 min: Silva is on his feet again. But he’s limping and is off the pitch for the time being. Samir Nasri, back in the squad after his lay-off, is warming up. 7.49pm GMT19:49 3 min: Sagna goes on a lightning burst down the right and clips a fine pass inside to Silva, who kills the ball with his first touch, just outside the D. Ryan Taylor bundles Silva over. The Spaniard is wincing. He’s feeling his left thigh a tad - or maybe it’s his knee. The physio is on. He’ll know more than me. 7.47pm GMT19:47 2 min: It’s not a full house at the Etihad tonight. We await the thoughts of Paul Scholes. 7.46pm GMT19:46 And we are off! Newcastle, in black and white stripes, get the game going and immediately retreat into the foetal position, needing all of eight seconds to give the ball away. They’ll be cowering from right to left in the first half. 7.44pm GMT19:44 Here come the players. Manchester City’s are walking with the airy confidence of a side who know they haven’t lost to Newcastle since 1972 or something. They’ve tended to tonk the Geordies when they’ve met in recent years, especially at home. Newcastle may regard this as a result if they get away from Manchester with their dignity intact. “So, instead of trying to build on the fragile momentum that’s developed after the last two wins and having a go at a Man City side that lost their last game and could be there for the taking, Newcastle are sending out the second string like they’re Real Madrid or something,” says Alec Gregory. “Woo, should be a great game.” WINNING CUPS IS DANGEROUS FOR YOUR HEALTH. What’s changed? Nothing’s changed. Kick-off: 7.45pm. |
