Professor Peter Stead, who first proposed the prize, commented: "When we first discussed setting up the prize we had no idea that it would be so well received. The prize's founding chairman, Professor Peter Stead, said the award would help put young writers in Wales into an international context.

Professor Stead said: "Swansea's been commemorating Dylan Thomas for years in a variety of ways - a festival and various other things.

The professor, who is also one of the judges, praised the "remarkably mature" books on the shortlist and said reaching a decision on the winner would be very difficult.
"We've had very long judging sessions," he said.
"But we've still not come to a decision. We're reconvening at the Dragon Hotel in Swansea at midday for another long session - it is going to the wire."
