The third victim, believed to be the 52-year-old knee surgeon Stuart Calder, will not be named by police following a request from his family. Witnesses told police how the fatal incident unfolded at a public meeting on Tuesday in Mawgan Porth village hall.
There is some doubt about what the victims were doing in the water. The RNLI said it was called to the scene when a group of “surfers” got into difficulties. But lifeguards involved in the rescue said that those pulled unconscious from the water had been swimming.
Surf Life Saving GB issued a statement on behalf of Brendon Prince, chairman of Torbay Surf Life Saving Club, and his friend Jon Harry, who were two of the first on the scene. It said: “All three casualties were wearing shortie wetsuits and no surf or body boards were attached, which indicates they were swimming.”
It said that one of the victims was the father of boys who had been caught in a rip tide while surfing.
There have been many tributes to Calder from his patients, friends and local politicians. Greg Mulholland, Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West, said Calder “died a hero trying to save others”. Jamie Hanley, prospective Labour party candidate for Pudsey, West Yorkshire, told the Yorkshire Post: “I had the privilege of getting to know Stuart as a first-rate knee surgeon.
