'Speeding away'
Det Insp Malcolm MacLeod, who is leading the investigation, appealed to anyone who may have been in the area at about 0700 GMT on Wednesday to get in touch.
He hopes to receive information about three or four people dressed in predominantly dark clothing, possibly wearing dark hats or balaclavas.
He added: "At that time of day people would be leaving for their work and it is possible that the assailants had access to a vehicle.
"I would therefore ask anyone who, at that time, saw a suspicious vehicle or a vehicle possibly speeding away from the area concerned to contact us.
"We are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry and are meantime carrying out a full forensic examination and house-to-house enquiries."
Anyone with information can contact Grampian Police on 0845 600 5700 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
