Police said Mr O'Connell had left a chip shop further up the road with his children when he saw the altercation between the two men and intervened.
Paying tribute to him, Sgt Darren Muggleton said: "He must have found a sense of duty...and decided to take action.
"Unfortunately something unfortunate happened and it was a tragic incident witnessed by his children.
"People have got to judge every situation as it appears to them.
"Mr O'Connell on this occasion intervened, but he did it for the right reasons, and he is a hero."
Sgt Muggleton said police had spoken to witnesses and Mr O'Connell's children were helping with their investigation.
