A trail of blood more than a mile long is being investigated by police in East Yorkshire.

The blood, believed to be human, was found stretching from St Andrew's Docks in Hull to parts of Hessle Road and Cholmley Street on Thursday.

Police said that due to the substantial amount of blood found they feared someone had suffered a "severe injury".

However, searches by air sea rescue on the banks of the Humber estuary had so far failed to identify a victim.

The blood was first spotted by a member of the public who was fishing off the docks and he alerted officers shortly before 11:00 BST on Thursday.

Police said initial tests led them to believe the blood was from a human, but samples had been sent for further DNA analysis.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on the non-emergency number 101.
