A copy of the first ever Avengers comic which was published 51 years ago has sold for £1,100 at an auction in Newcastle.

The comic was one of about 2,000 to go under the hammer at Anderson and Garland.

Another highlight was a copy of the first X-Men comic, published in 1963, which sold for £1,000.

Both comics were sold by the widow of a South Yorkshire collector and bought by a specialist dealer in the Midlands.

Other big money comics included a well-read copy of the Fantastic Four number one [first publication]that sold for £780, a Daredevil number one that fetched £400 and an X-Men number two that went for £380.

Auctioneer John Anderson said: "This was a wonderful sale that attracted a huge amount of interest from bidders around the UK."

'Gold dust'

The auction included comics from prominent publishers Marvel and DC and many came from the Yorkshire collection, which was being auctioned on behalf of the collector's widow.

Mr Anderson said: "The comics from this collection were as good as gold dust.

"They included comics that you do not normally come across unless you're dealing with a knowledgeable collector."

The auction also included a huge collection of science fiction magazines dating from the 1930s to the 1950s, and a highly collectible copy of Viz number one, which was signed by co-founders Simon and Chris Donald and sold for £350.

A collection of Star Wars figures sold for £380.
