A nine-year-old boy and a man aged 44 have died after a house fire in South Yorkshire, police said. A nine-year-old boy and his father have died after a suspicious house fire in South Yorkshire.
A second boy, 11, is critically ill in hospital following the fire in Penistone, near Barnsley. Darren Sykes, 44, and his son Paul David Sykes were found in the blaze in Penistone, near Barnsley.
Police said emergency services were called to the property in Tennyson Close at 18:30 BST on Tuesday. A second boy who was rescued from the fire, aged 11, remains critically ill in hospital with serious injuries.
The three were taken to hospital, where the man and youngest boy were pronounced dead. An investigation into the cause is under way. South Yorkshire Police said the fire was being treated as suspicious but they are are not looking for anyone else over the incident.
Firefighters found "a fully-developed fire throughout the house", South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said. Ch Insp Debbie Mahmood, said: "This is a tragic incident in which a young child has lost his life and a full investigation will be carried out.
"Our thoughts are with the family of those involved in this tragic incident," said a fire service spokesman. "My thoughts and condolences are with the family of the young boys at this distressing time."
Bedside vigil
Emergency services were called to the property in Tennyson Close at about 18:30 BST on Tuesday.
The three victims were taken to hospital, where Mr Sykes and his son were pronounced dead.
The 11-year-old's mother is keeping a bedside vigil, police said.
The house remains cordoned off and the cul-de-sac, which is being guarded by police, is closed to traffic.
Police declined to comment on whether a substance had been used to accelerate the spread of the blaze.
